This is the shortest reliable path to a working Portico Server. Complete it on your home network before setting up remote access.
1. Install Portico Server
Download the package for the computer that stores or can reach your media. Keep the default service and data-folder settings unless you already have a reason to change them.
2. Choose how to sign in
Open Portico on the server. The first-run screen offers two choices:
- Choose Portico Account for one account across Portico apps, invitations, and direct remote access. Select Continue to Portico, approve the short-lived claim, and return to the server.
- Choose This Server only to keep the owner identity on this server. Enter a username, display name, email, and a unique password with at least eight characters, uppercase and lowercase letters, and a number or special character. Confirm the local-account notice, then select Create This Server owner.
Either path creates the server owner. Do not share that owner identity with viewers.
3. Add one library
Open Settings → Media, choose Add library, and create a Movies or TV Shows library. Select a folder containing a small, well-organized set of files. Starting small makes naming and permission problems easier to spot.
4. Wait for the first scan
Portico reads the folder, creates media records, and adds available artwork and details. Open the library when the scan finishes and check a few items.
5. Test playback locally
Play one item from a browser or another device on the same network. Confirm that playback starts, progress is saved, and the item can be resumed. At that point, the basic setup is complete.
Once local playback works, add normal viewer accounts and configure remote access if it is needed.
